Romania Deploys Fighter Jets After Russian Drone Incursion
According to the ministry, the alert began when two German Eurofighter Typhoon jets launched from Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base to monitor cross-border air activity as Russian forces carried out attacks close to the Danube River boundary with Romania.
Romanian radar then picked up a drone signal roughly 8 kilometers (4.9 miles) inside national airspace, near the southeastern Tulcea County villages of Periprava and Chilia Veche.
The object appeared and disappeared on radar for about 12 minutes, tracing a path from Colibași, Moldova, across to Foltești, Romania, and later over the vicinity of Oancea.
In response, two additional Romanian Air Force F-16s were dispatched from the 71st Air Base in Câmpia Turzii. The Eurofighters returned to Mihail Kogălniceanu at 1:50 a.m. (2350 GMT), while the F-16s landed back at Câmpia Turzii around 2:30 a.m. (0030 GMT).
"No cases of impact with the ground of any aircraft were reported," said the ministry.
